LifeShare Goes Green - Blue!
LifeShare Management Group, Inc. volunteers on a monthly basis for the Blue Ocean Society. The Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation is a non-profit organization based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire that promotes awareness and conservation of the marine environment through education and research in New England. The Blue Ocean Society’s Adopt-a-Beach program enlists volunteers from a variety of businesses, organizations and clubs to clean up a particular beach area on a monthly basis. LifeShare Management Group, Inc. adopted the South Mill Pond in Portsmouth in 2007 and has done a monthly clean-up ever since.
The first Wednesday of each month, individuals from LifeShare gather at the South Mill Pond, sporting latex gloves and plastic bags to scout the perimeter of the pond. Some volunteers remove any litter found from the area while others simultaneously record the specifics of what is being removed on data tracking cards. Over the past two years, LifeShare has removed hundreds of pounds of litter from the banks of the pond. Pictured here, Chad T. and Gerard J. are at LifeShare's monthly Blue Ocean Society clean-up. Chad and Gerard are enthusiastic participants each month. They feel it is important to keep LifeShare's adopted site, the South Mill Pond in Portsmouth and their community clean.
The individuals and the support staff at LifeShare take great pride in volunteering for the Blue Ocean Society. Everyone involved each month reap the educational benefits of volunteering in a natural habitat, have learned much about conservation and the marine environment and have learned the immediate impact that their own littering has on their community. Participating in monthly clean-ups has taught them to think differently when making their own choices regarding litter. The individuals and staff in our community-based program enjoy having a regularly scheduled activity that is based outside and has a real impact our endangered environment and the marine life that inhabits it as well as improving the community we all share. Additionally, the Blue Ocean Society’s Adopt-a-Beach program has helped the individuals in LifeShare’s program develop a stronger sense of community and purpose through their participation in protecting it. LifeShare is thrilled to have developed this relationship with the Blue Ocean Society and plans to continue to volunteer in their programs for years to come.
